Diving Instructors enjoy careers in an expanding industry, with opportunities for travel, work in exotic destinations and recognition among fellow divers. Many instructors eventually own their own dive store, charter operation or resort-- and around the world, no other group of instructors enjoys as much success as do PADI Instructors. PADI Instructors are in demand. As one, you may have the opportunity to work for any of the more than 1700 PADI Dive Centers in more than 82 countries, each a member of the world's largest dive retail association. At any given time, there are more requests for PADI Instructors than there are PADI Instructors available to fill them. The path to becoming an Open Water Scuba Instructor is a four-step process: the prerequisite PADI Rescue Diver and PADI Divemaster courses, followed by the Instructor Development Course (IDC) and the Instructor Examination (I.E.). Each step requires candidates to meet high standards of learning, performance, technical knowledge, water skills and physical ability-- all major reasons PADI Instructors are high in demand.
Instructor Development Course(IDC) Requirements:
18 years old or older
PADI Divemaster or Assistant Instructor
If not a PADI Divemaster must successfully complete the PADI Divemaster course Diver Rescue Skills Assessment
Proof of 60 logged dives
Have documentation of experience in Deep, Night, and Navigation Diving
Certified as a scuba diver for 6 months or more
Submit proof of current CPR training (no older than 24 months)
Submit documentation of any equivalent (non PADI) certification for entry-level, advanced and rescue certifications
Submit a medical statement signed by a licensed Physician within the last 12 months.
Instructor Examination (I.E.):
Have successfully completed an IDC or IOC within the last 12 months
Have been certified as a scuba diver for 12 months or more
Submit proof of 100 logged dives
The cost of the IDC is $1250.00. All materials and equipment must be supplied by the candidate.
Fees not included in the course are:
