Diving in Aruba is famous for the spectacular shipwrecks and interesting coral formations that dominate Aruba's underwater realm. This includes the 400 foot Antilla wreck—one of the largest wrecks in the Caribbean. Most of Aruba's dive sites lie along the protected western and southern coasts, a short distance from the hotels on Palm Beach. Aruba's waters are rich in exotic marine life, including stingrays, moray eels, manta rays, barracudas and yellow tail. A large, shallow sand plateau surrounds Aruba making boat travel the most convenient method of reaching the off-shore reefs. Interesting coral formations are found from shallow water depths of 20 to 100 feet, with little or no current and flat surface conditions. Over twenty moored dive sites are shared by the dive operators on the island, and Red Sail Sports offers a weekly dive boat scheduled to the best of these sites.

Dive Boats
Red Sail Sports boasts Aruba’s most modern dive boats. We’re the proud owner of two Pro 48 Rob Shirley dive boats named "Biba Bon" and “Pasa Bon” - ("Live Well" and "Have a Good Time" in Papiamento, the native language). Equipped with 750 total horsepower, and measuring 48 feet from pulpit to dive platform, these sleek, fast new crafts have a comfortable 392 square feet of open deck space to accommodate up to 24 divers and 64 scuba tanks. The boats are built with easy access to the dive platform featuring twin drop down ladders, a two-tiered photo table for camera and video equipment, plus fresh water showers for rinsing off. "The boats were custom designed for longer trips and has reduced trips to the Harbor Reef & Tugboat dive sites to only 15 to 20 minutes from our pier at the Hyatt," reports Peter DeHoop, Red Sail Sports Aruba Operations Manager. The newest boat, the Biba Bon, delivered in February 2005 marks the milestone of our 15th anniversary. We wanted to better serve our growing base of new and returning customers. The best way to accomplish that was to purchase a new dive boat that would expand our capabilities by 50%.

The custom designed dive boat ‘Vista Mar’ ("View of the Sea") is Red Sail Sports’ 40-foot dive boat. Designed in the United States for operation in the waters of Aruba, this boat can also comfortably accommodate up to 24 people and was designed with a diver’s needs and comfort in mind. It offers fresh water showers, two fresh water rinse tanks, a spacious dive platform, dual entry ladders, a head and advanced marine communications.

The Five Top Dive Sites in Aruba

Jane Sea Wreck (20-100')
A 250' cement freighter sitting upright on the bottom in 90' of water. The wreck attracts lots of schooling tropical fish and large barracudas. Deep water gorgonians, sponges and coral growing on the wreck. Excellent for photography.

Antilla Wreck (60')
Locally referred to as the "Ghost Ship" this German freighter (brand new at the time) was scuttled on May 10, 1940 when the Germans invaded Holland during World War II. The largest wreck in the Caribbean (400' long), it is great for penetrations due to the large compartments of this vessel. Covered by giant tube sponges and coral formations, the wreck is surrounded by millions of bait fish, fast swimming predators and colorful tropical fish.

Kantil Reef (40-110')
Fascinating "drop off" with giant boulders of brain & star coral. Also an abundance of massive formations of leaf and sheet corals. Between 60 and 80' you may see a sleeping nurse shark.

Sonesta Airplanes (15-60')
Dive into these two airplanes, a Convair 400 and a Beech 18. The Convair sits in 40-60 feet of water and the Beech sits in 15 feet of water amidst soft corals in a sloping reef down to 100 feet.

Mike's Reef (25-90')
Enormous clusters of gorgonians, brain and star coral dominate Mike's Reef. Brilliant purple and orange sponges form a breathtaking backdrop for the procession of colorful fish and barracuda that inhabit this site.
